Ready to explore Brisbane’s bar scene? Brisbane is the sun-drenched capital of Queensland and, with a population of around 2.1 million, the third largest city on the continent. The lifestyle is less hectic and also the prices are a bit lower compared to Melbourne and Sydney. Brisbane has a vibrant art and music scene. The culinary sphere is emerging and is currently a hotspot of attraction for famous chefs. For the drinks experience, it is no less interesting.

Cobbler Bar – For Whisky Lovers
Located down a quiet street of the West End of Brisbane, Cobbler Bar was the first stop on my bartinerary in Brisbane. Dark curtains block out the entrance and I wasn’t sure what to expect. You are transferred right back to the prohibition era by an atmospheric hideaway with a charming interior filled with whisky.
Down-to-earth, very friendly and a place to get carried away
An impressive collection of more than 500 whisky bottles finds its place on the back bar which is stocked to the ceiling with high-quality spirits. This place has the charm of an industrial loft with cosy chesterfield furniture. There are two floors, and upstairs you will find some sofas to lounge on. As I was there on Margarita Monday, I opted for two drinks from the dedicated Margarita menu. The everyday menu comes in a handy size and lists 20 drinks split over 5 sections. Sections are named after trades, and the drink names come from the tools used. The Nail Gun, a nice play on a Rob Roy, suited me perfectly.
Savile Row – Speakeasyesque vibe and incredible backbar
Behind an orange door in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane you will find a selection of around 900 spirits. It is the younger sister of Cobbler by the way. Cobbler opened in 2013 while Savile Row opened its doors in 2017. A dimly-lit and cosy place in the style of a speakeasy to get lost in time and space. Beside all the bottles, a huge chandelier glows and gives the tiny looking place its intimacy. You will be surprised at how big the place really is when you walk up the stairs.
The speakeasyesque vibe, the incredible backbar, the dark colours and the flickering lights of the candles make you feel at home immediately.
The menu is easy to understand, and the cocktails are well described with matching illustrations. You can also find beers on tap, and white and red wines on the list. I opted for a concoction of bourbon, genepi, pear eau de vie, lemon myrtle crazy citrus, Dandelion & Burdock Bitters. A delightful start to a great evening.
Boom Boom Room – Intimate and Luxurious
One of Brisbane’s younger bars is housed in the underground chambers of the heritage-listed Queensland Government Savings Bank building. As soon as you have descended the staircase you will find yourself in an atmospheric place. The old vaults have been turned into separate areas. With its arches, heavy curtains and comfy seats, this place has something both intimate and luxurious.

The menu is an ode to music and divided into the three playlists: Funk, Soul Sisters and Double Time. The cocktails have been thoughtfully created using modern kitchen techniques. My drink of choice, Superstition, brought together Knob Creek Rye, Mushroom & Thyme Amaro, Manzanilla vinegar and walnut oil. An intense and umami flavour experience accompanied by some delicious bites from the bar food menu. Compared to most bars, where you have to order at the counter, this bar has table service and the staff are happy to help you find your perfect drink. A great experience.
Maker – Small and Stylish
Tucked away in Fish Lane you will find a bar with a comfy and shiny bar counter.
Fourteen seats, small, stylish and minimalistic. A bar in accordance with my taste.
The glassware is elegant, the drinking list short and they are focussed on seasonal products. I asked for a drink highlighting Australian spirits. I got a Negroni with the wonderful Okar Amaro, the delicious MAiDENii Vermouth and the Nosferatu Blood Orange Gin. Cheers and a must visit on your list.

Mr Percival’s – Real Eye Candy
This place is a feast for the eyes. The location, the architecture, the colours, the back bar … You will find Mr Percival’s sitting underneath the Story Bridge with a romantic view of the river. It’s an octagonal building with a tropical atmosphere in pastel colours. I liked the green paint and especially the peach coloured chair covers and the tiny palm trees from the very first moment. Real eye candy.
The octagonal structure of this Overwater-Bar is unique. A bar that has unique charm and a stunning view of Brisbane.
It has a beach club atmosphere where you can enjoy your aperitivo and some Italian bites. Nice to know, Mr Percival’s takes its name from the pelican in the iconic Australian story Storm Boy.
