Flitting and sipping my way around the Viennese cocktail scene

My visit to Vienna was too brief to visit all my planned destinations. However, I was able to explore the old and the new cocktail scene flitting and sipping here and there. Here are some impressions not to forget.

Vienna has many bars in the style of the American Bar where you can get an average cocktail. I opted for three of them conveniently located around St. Stephen’s Cathedral, more commonly known by its German name Stephansdom.

Loos American Bar

Adolf Loos designed the American Bar in Vienna in 1908. He is one of the pioneers of modern architecture and today the bar has been classified as an historic monument. This bar is one of the oldest and, of course, a touristic attraction. I was curious about the interior design and very surprised by the quite handsome and very friendly bartender.

The design elements – wood, glass, brass, onyx – are bathed in a golden glow. In addition to the demand for modernity, Loos felt it was particularly important to built a comfort area. 27m² are indeed very cosy but could be uncomfortable for people with claustrophobia. The bar is not only an architectural gem, no, it is also a drinking den to get lost in time. I had a nice chat with the bartender and a Brandy Crusta for the first time in a long time. Classy, solid and nothing to complain about.

Roberto American Bar

Roberto opens its doors early for an Aperif or two. You can take your seat at the massive oval bar counter under the impressive chandelier or sink into the black velvet of the intimate booths alongside the wall. Named after the owner, this bar is a perfect place to sip an Espresso Martini and browse the menu book with its nice pictures. Due to the shape of the bar you can easily get in contact with your neighbours and the bartender. I really liked the elegance of the place paired with the laid back atmosphere.

Kleinod

Kleinod means little gem in German and is a great mix of classic drinks and homemade creations. An elegant furnishing, dark wood, maple and leather, and some rare spirits showcased in display cabinets await you. My drink of choice was a Vieux Carré, followed by a Bourbon heavy Julep and a tasty New York Bagel. My ears were treated to jazzy tunes. Definitely a place to pop in.

It was time to leave the inner-most district of Vienna and head to the 7th district to the newest answers to the vibrant viennese cocktail scene.

Matiki

The Polynesian cocktail culture has found a place in Vienna. Fun drinks, fun time and a lot of rum. Luxurious furnishing? You couldn’t be more wrong. This is a minimalistic Tiki bar. Restraint in design, but not with drinks. What you can look forward to at Matiki is an exotic drinking experience. Typical tiki mugs and a beautiful illustrated cocktail menu are their trademarks. The rest is a modern and very successful update. Warm welcome guaranteed! A must visit place.
